Why Nature Soothes the Nervous System
Monday Musings: Why Nature Soothes the Nervous System
A walk in nature is one of the simplest ways to calm your mind and restore your energy. I went into the forest with my daughter today, and it reminded me how deeply nature heals. When we slow down and open our senses, our whole system begins to relax.
“I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.”
— John Burroughs
Nature invites us to come back to our senses, literally. When we listen to the soft wind in the trees, the birds singing, the hum of early spring, something inside us begins to settle. The nervous system responds to these natural rhythms, reminding us that we are part of something steady and alive.
Notice the gentle lines of the trees, the many shades of green, the scent of fresh earth and moss. Touch the bark, feel the texture, breathe it all in. Each sense becomes a doorway back to presence.
So often, we go out into nature but stay disconnected, running with headphones in or scrolling as we walk. But true restoration happens when we listen. When we give our full attention to the world around us, the noise in our head quiets, and our body remembers how to rest.
Nature is medicine for the nervous system. It grounds us, balances our energy, and brings us back to presence. 🌿
